Graveyard Study - Holly Berries

Graveyard Study - Holly Berries

This is part of my final project for advanced digital photo. We have to take a set of photos centering around one visual theme. This assignment is based on the idea of a coffee table book. I selected the theme of graveyards.

This particular picture was taken as a introduction image for the series. I used it as a title page.

When memories are forgotten, when loved ones have moved on, when history has been rewritten – this is what is left. A piece of stone. On it, a name and a date. This is what a person is reduced to in death. These simple pieces of stone are meant to represent a lifetime. Gravestones are a way for the living to cling to the memories of the loved ones they have lost – to lessen the feelings of loss. When the memories are forgotten, what, then, is the purpose of a gravestone? A name that history has forgotten. A life that time has passed by – trapped in a field of melancholic decay. This is death’s one true legacy. A piece of stone. A blank slate left open to the interpretation of future generations. A lifetime judged by the appearance of a single stone. As you view these gravestones, think about their meaning. Who were these people? What were they like? What has time forgotten about them?

This one is more of a cover image to introduce the set.
